A maritime accident occurred on Saturday morning involving a tugboat operated by Maldives Ports Limited and a private speedboat near the Male Commercial Port. The collision, reported at 10:39 am, led to injuries for the speedboat captain, who was subsequently transported to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for assessment. While initial reports suggest the captain's injuries are not life-threatening, the speedboat suffered extensive structural damage. Authorities confirmed four individuals were on board the vessel at the time of the incident, though the count of personnel on the tugboat remains unverified. The accident was reported to the police at 10:39 am Saturday.
A police spokesperson said the accident resulted in injuries to the captain of the speedboat, who was taken to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The spokesperson did not provide any details regarding the injuries, but said that initial reports do not indicate they are serious.
The police said that there were four people onboard the speedboat when the accident took place; the captain and three crew members.
However, the police did not say how many, if any, were on the tugboat.
While the accident resulted in one injury, it caused massive damage to the speedboat.
