Niuma Mohamed, a prominent former figure in the local film industry, recently became the target of a severe digital harassment campaign after social media rumours falsely claimed she had been hired for a lucrative position at the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The misinformation, which alleged she received a monthly salary of MVR 40,000 without corresponding employment duties, triggered a massive influx of over 1,500 phone calls and 400 messages to her private number. Consequently, Niuma was forced to disconnect her contact line to secure her privacy. She has since called for MTCC to take institutional responsibility, suspecting that internal leaks or misinformation from company employees catalyzed the vitriolic social media reaction.

  • Niuma Mohamed received over 1,500 calls and 400 messages due to false rumours.
  • The actress was forced to deactivate her phone line due to the overwhelming scale of harassment.
  • Claims of a MVR 40,000 salary for a non-existent role drove public resentment.
  • The victim is demanding accountability from the MTCC regarding the spread of misinformation.

Former local movie star Niuma Mohamed says she has received more than 1,500 phone calls and over 400 messages after rumours spread on social media claiming she had been offered a job at the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

She said the harassment became so overwhelming that she eventually had to disconnect her phone number.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Niuma said MTCC officials should take responsibility for the distress and losses she suffered, alleging that the rumour was spread by an employee of the company.

“MTCC officials should take responsibility for the dirty things people are saying to me on social media and for the losses I suffered because of an MTCC employee. Since yesterday, I have received more than 1,500 calls and more than 400 messages,” she wrote.

Some social media users had criticised her, claiming she was being given a job with a salary of MVR 40,000 without actually working. Responding to this, Niuma said people were spreading misinformation without checking facts.

“People are rolling around on social media without looking at any facts. I don’t get a job that pays MVR 40,000. I wish somebody would pay me such an amount and let me stay home earning it,” she said.

Allegations that government companies offer high‑paying jobs to politically connected or influential individuals frequently surface on social media. MTCC has not officially commented on the allegations.
